James Russell leads the yacht exteriors team, guiding a team of eight in translating clients’ aspirations into a cohesive and striking exterior language. His designs balance proportion, flow, and dynamic presence with the technical precision required for performance and build. 

The team also develops general arrangements ensuring a harmony between a unique exterior design and a balanced lifestyle on board. Since joining the studio in 2013, James has designed and project managed some of Winch Design’s most iconic superyacht projects, including 80m Excellence, 80m Genesis, 74m Aurora and 67m Sparta. He has collaborated with leading shipyards worldwide and worked closely with a diverse range of clients. 

In addition to yacht exteriors, James and his team design custom tenders and regularly develop innovative yacht concepts, consistently pushing the boundaries of superyacht design. James studied Transport Design at Coventry University and spent five years working with an experienced yacht designer prior to joining Winch, laying the foundation for his expertise in exterior yacht design.
